The anal anatomy is absolutely rich with nerve endings. These nerve endings branch from the pudendal nerve, which is the same nerve as serves the clitoris. Touching the anus brings a direct and almost focused sense of pleasure.
The anus has two rings of muscle responsible for controlling digestion. The outer ring (external anal sphincter) is in our conscious control, while the inner ring is controlled by our autonomic nervous system (parasympathetic nervous system), which is not in our control. It relaxes with pressure from within such as the pressure from gas or feces inside.
As you move further inside the anal canal (1 – 2 inches long), stimulation of pressure and stretch is picked up by the same nerves that respond to the inner vagina and cervix – the pelvic nerves. Stimulating these nerves brings a deep and throbbing sensation, a feeling that many find extremely arousing.
The tissue in the anal canal (simple columnar epithelium) is delicate and absorbing. As you move further inside the rectum the tissue changes to endo and ectodermal tissue.
The gastrointestinal tract produces a mucus that helps move waste along, which is very different from the lubrication in the vagina. This mucus has been known to increase in some people during sexual arousal, but for most people it is not produced in large enough amounts to act as a lubricant. And any mucus that does exist is likely to carry some bacteria. For this reason it is important to use lubricant for any sexual play involving the anus.
